By 2050, the number of people age 65 and older with Alzheimer's disease in the United States is projected to reach nearly 13 million. But that doesn't have to be our future.
Alzheimer's & Brain Awareness Month is 30 days dedicated to communicating the facts about this devastating disease. Supporters are wearing purple, volunteering in their communities and raising awareness about the impact of Alzheimer's. It's a time for all of us to work together because:
We're all at risk: The lifetime risk — the probability that someone who does not have a particular condition will develop that condition — for Alzheimer's dementia at age 45 was approximately 1 in 5 for women and 1 in 10 for men.
Alzheimer's shortens lives: Among people age 70, 61% of those with Alzheimer's are expected to die before age 80 compared with 30% of people without Alzheimer's or another dementia.
This disease costs us dearly: More than 11 million Americans provide unpaid care for a family member or friend with dementia, a contribution to the nation valued at nearly $350 billion.
