Ayanna — in partnership with Representatives Robin Kelly, Karen Bass,
Barbara Lee and Senator Elizabeth Warren — just introduced the Equitable
Data Collection and Disclosure on COVID-19 Act, to require the federal
government to collect and release demographic data on the impact of
COVID-19, including data on race and ethnicity.
It’s past time the Department of Health and Human Services begins
collecting this vital data, which is essential to identifying and
responding to racial disparities in testing and treatment. We need to
ensure that communities of color have equitable access to care and
economic support, and we need a broad, grassroots coalition of people to
demand this action from the federal government.

support for collecting and reporting data on how COVID-19 is impacting
communities of color?

In Boston, initial reporting shows that - among people whose race was
reported - more than 40% of those infected with COVID-19 are Black, even
though Black folks make up less than 25% of the city’s population.
History has shown us that in the face of any public health crisis,
communities of color disproportionately suffer. Communities of color are
less likely to have access to quality and affordable health care and more
likely to live with underlying conditions.
The stark racial disparities in COVID-19 cases and deaths are a disturbing
reminder of that reality, and makes clear the need for nationwide,
race-specific data collection. Racial justice, healthcare justice, and
economic justice must be centered in our government’s response to the
COVID-19 pandemic.

join Ayanna in calling on the Department of Health and Human Services to
collect and make public this vital data.
Thank you for taking action today,
The A-Team
