A Month in Review: May 2024 Congressional Update

May was a particularly important time for our community in the House of Representatives.

As a member of the House Armed Services Committee, I spent 12 hours in a hearing with my colleagues on the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), the bipartisan legislation that funds our military.

To ensure the United States continues to recruit and retain the most talented military and civilian workforce we need, the FY25 NDAA base text has been led by the final report of the Quality of Life panel – a bipartisan panel I was appointed to – that focused on pay and compensation, housing, health care, childcare, and spousal support. I'm thrilled that these improvements will directly impact our servicemembers at Fort Bliss.

High and rising housing costs are top of mind for many young adults and new families in our community.

That's why it was great to meet with El Pasoans in DC on behalf of the National Association of Realtors and discuss changes in the El Paso real estate market.

I’m thrilled to have joined the City of El Paso to celebrate the federal funding I secured for three projects in our community.

The over $2 million will be allocated to purchase a small fleet of electric micro-transit vehicles, design & build the terminal bridge at the El Paso Airport, and develop a new facility for the Business One-Stop Shop (BOSS) Program.

I hosted a reception for the 2024 Congressional Art Competition.

It was my honor to congratulate Hanks Knight Carolina Segoviano for her winning piece named ‘Uno Para Ti, Uno Para Mi’ and to showcase the exceptional artwork of all the inspiring student artists who participated in our district’s 2024 Congressional Art Competition.

It was lovely to meet with the dedicated, compassionate team from Border Servant Corps and visit their new facility that will add more capacity to their shelter network.

We spoke about the challenges they face and how I can best continue to help with navigating our broken immigration system.
