Friend,
Yesterday, progressive judge Jill Karofsky won a key Wisconsin Supreme Court race in a major victory for LGBTQ+ rights, fair elections, unions, and gun safety. Despite the GOP’s brazen and desperate efforts to suppress the vote, young voters pushed forward and fought for our values.
Nevertheless, this victory feels bittersweet. An unknown number of voters and poll workers may have been exposed to COVID-19 simply for participating in our democracy.
Despite the pleas of Democratic Governor Tony Evers and public health officials to postpone this election and expand mail-in absentee voting, Republican legislators willingly risked people’s lives in a failed attempt to steal a Supreme Court seat.
Act now: Fight back against voter suppression and urge Congress to expand ballot access and pass universal vote-by-mail nationwide.
Despite numerous opportunities to do the right thing, Republican legislators in Wisconsin fought to suppress the vote and silence the voices of thousands of voters. Their actions were not just irresponsible — they were undemocratic.
This election should be a stark reminder of what we are up against this year. Donald Trump and his lackeys will do everything they can to discourage us from voting and maintain their grip on power. This fall, we can yet again prove that it won’t work.
As we prepare for November and the fights ahead, we must do all in our power to prepare our states’ election systems for the new reality of COVID-19.
Send a message to your members of Congress: Protect voters and our democracy by enacting universal vote-by-mail now.
Last night’s win was a reminder that we together can overcome impossible odds and unprecedented circumstances — but only if we all use our voices and vote.
Thank you,
Ben Wessel
