Dear Colleagues and Allies,

Welcome to GATJ’s June newsletter. We are excited to share with you highlights from May, updates in the coalition, and key events that are on the horizon.

** May Highlights

UN Framework Convention on International Tax Cooperation

GATJ participated in the first session to draft the terms of reference for the UN Tax Convention this past April 26 - May 8th.

The second session will take place from July 29 - August 16 at the UN in New York. In preparation for the session, GATJ will be co-hosting regional events and meetings in Africa, Asia, and Latin America.

** GATJ Updates

Welcome Tomás Lukin and Alexandra Wenzel to the GATJ Secretariat!

Tomás joins the team as the Global Campaigns and Policy Advocacy Coordinator. He brings with him over a decade of experience working on tax and economic justice. Tomás is based in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Alexandra joins as the Global Communications Coordinator and as the interim lead of the Tax & Gender Working Group. She brings experience working in communications on human rights and environmental justice. Alexandra is based in Vancouver, Canada.


** GATJ’s Members

LATIN AMERICA
Red de Justicia Fiscal de América Latina y El Caribe (RJFALC) and civil society partners gave recommendations ([link removed]) to the G20 Finance Ministers on the need for the global tax rules to be coordinated by the UN.

RJFALC and GATJ also participated in the Platform for Taxation in Latin America and the Caribbean (PTLAC). RJFALC will discuss the global implications of PTLAC at a virtual event on June 20, register here. ([link removed])

AFRICA

Tax Justice Network Africa (TJNA) launched the Tax and Illicit Financial Flows (TIFF) Hub ([link removed]) in partnership with the East African Tax and Governance Network (EATGN).

ASIA

Tax and Fiscal Justice - Asia (TAFJA) held it’s 3rd Regional Assembly on the theme "Unity for Tax and Fiscal Justice!" The Assembly commemorated TAFJA’s 10th anniversary and served as a platform to strategize and coordinate with members.

At the Assembly, Rural Reconstruction Nepal (RRN) and the Asian Peoples' Movement on Debt and Development (APMDD) were elected as co-coordinators of TAFJA.

NORTH AMERICA

Canadians for Tax Fairness (C4TF) celebrated the increase of the capital gains tax in the 2024 Federal Budget ([link removed]) . C4TF published this report ([link removed]) on capital gains and productivity.

The Financial Accountability & Corporate Transparency (FACT) Coalition has launched a new policy platform on “Principles for Taxing U.S. Multinational Corporations After 2025 ([link removed]) .”

EUROPE

Tax Justice Europe (TJ-E) launched the Tax Pledge Platform ([link removed]) in preparation for the European Parliamentary elections.


** June Events
------------------------------------------------------------

20 - 22nd

📍Quezon City, the Philippines

TAFJA and GATJ are co-hosting a Multi-Stakeholders’ Forum and Asia Strategy Workshop in collaboration with APMDD and RRN. Civil society and stakeholders from Asia will work together under the theme of “Rewriting Global Tax Rules, Making Taxes Work for People and the Planet: UN Tax Convention Now!”

24 - 28th

📍Tunis, Tunisia

On the 24 - 25th, TJNA and L’Observatoire Tunisien de l’Economie (OTE) will host a civil society convening, attended by GATJ, on the global tax rules and the UN Tax Convention under the title “The Role of African Countries in Defining New Global Tax Rules.”

On the 26 - 28th, TJNA, the African Union Commission (AUC), and the African Tax Administration Forum (ATAF) are co-hosting the Pan-African Network Conference on Fighting IFFs in Africa on “Africa’s Tax Agenda in Combatting Illicit Financial Flows: From Words to Action.”
