This is a long-standing fight and a really critical issue for our movement, and we should explain why.
First, USPS employs nearly 100,000 veterans making it one of the top federal employers in the country. It has preferential hiring practices for veterans -- especially disabled vets -- and in many places across the US is the top employer for veterans of color.
Disabled veterans, senior veterans, and other veterans depend on the mail to get the benefits they EARNED through their service. If we cripple USPS now, we're putting veterans' benefits at risk at a time they can least afford it.
For years, Republicans have tried to destroy our USPS, so for-profit corporations could become the sole mail delivery outfits in the United States. And now, there is a new reason they're attacking USPS - to stop mail-in voting.
Donald Trump makes no secret of the fact that he believes the more people vote, the worse his own odds are. By crippling USPS's ability to deliver ballots, he and partisan Republicans make vote-by-mail less possible, forcing people to pick voting in person in a time of pandemic, or not voting at all, to protect their health.
The long and the short of it is this: our service members overseas and veterans here at home depend on the US Postal Service to vote-by-mail and receive critical benefits when they need them.
