Dear Friends,

In the Mexican general elections on 2 June, Claudia Sheinbaum won the presidential race with nearly 60% of the vote. She will become Mexico’s first woman president when sworn in on 1st October.

A few days before the elections, Sheinbaum made a commitment to Reporters Without Borders (RSF) to defend journalism if elected. Notably, to implement a five-point strategic action plan designed to ensure that Mexico ceases to be the dangerous country, currently at peace, for journalists.

One of the future government’s priorities in this regard will be to oversee the judicial system’s investigations into crimes of violence against journalists. Impunity fuels the cycle of violence that holds sway in Mexico. The federal government must work hand in hand with local and specialised prosecutors' offices to strengthen resources and ensure that they conduct exhaustive investigations. A working group should be set up in the first quarter of 2025 to move ahead on this.

Sheinbaum’s election following the pledge given to RSF to defend journalism, and the upcoming measures are excellent news for access to freely reported and reliable information in Mexico. It is because of your help that RSF can achieve such victories. We thank you for generosity and your constant support.
