In the middle of this unprecedented public health crisis, I can’t stop thinking about our essential workers putting their lives at risk every day to protect us. Sadly, we can’t say the same thing about the president.
While we’re focused on beating the global pandemic, doing our part by staying inside and trying to stay safe, Trump’s EPA is hard at work giving handouts to polluting industries and moving forward on one of its most dangerous decisions yet — limiting the role of science and medical data in decision making — putting the lives of millions of Americans at risk now and for years to come.
With this new move, the EPA is turning its back on public health. Not only is it taking decision-making out of the hands of the scientific community — by enacting a rule opposed by dozens of leading public health and medical associations whose members are currently on the front lines fighting for our lives — but it is also leaving enforcement decisions in the hands of unqualified, industry-friendly Trump loyalists.

This inhumane rollback will make the public health crisis worse, giving a free pass to Trump’s fossil fuel cronies. Now, vulnerable populations like seniors and people with asthma are not only threatened by a fast-spreading virus, they also face power plants and refineries spewing smog and soot, and chemical plants dumping unlimited toxic pollution — all in violation of EPA permits — without the threat of enforcement for those violations.
