John --

In a disturbing fascistic rant, Trump claimed yesterday that he has “absolute power” over when states can reopen in the face of the COVID 19 pandemic.

“The President of the United States calls the shots...When someone is the President of the United States the authority is total. And that’s the way it’s got to be”, Trump said.

The 10th Amendment to the Constitution is clear. Powers to regulate behavior during a public-health crisis lie ONLY in the hands of the states, not the Executive Branch.

Yesterday Trump also used the daily coronavirus press conference to play a propaganda video packed with outright lies, deceptive edits, and misinformation in an effort to rewrite history surrounding his gross mismanagement of the COVID-19 pandemic and to attack the press.

No elected official is permitted to use their official duties to campaign for reelection. Trump’s actions yesterday are not only amoral, but they’re also a blatant violation of campaign law, on the public’s dime and time, no less.

While Americans are worried about the lives of their loved ones, their livelihoods, their homes, and their basic necessities, our Administration used the podium for what amounts to nothing more than a campaign rally.

Trump is an exaggerated and outrageous personification of executive overreach and abuse of power. Executive overreach didn’t start with Trump -- but it must end with this presidency.

We were all taught that the Constitution provides a system of checks and balances. But for too long Congress has shirked its responsibility to check presidents who abuse their power, and look at what it’s gotten us.

No President is above the law. No President has absolute power. But, we must elect a Congress that is willing to step up, do its job and protect the American people.

Congressional campaigns are underway and primaries are fast approaching. Voters are already casting ballots in several states and we need to reach as many as we can. Will you contribute $5 today to help our candidates win these critical races?

Our current crisis will have lasting effects. We need the next Congress to have moral clarity and the courage to stand up to abuses of power. It is critical that we elect as many principled, progressive leaders as possible this year.

These next few weeks are critical as primaries have been rescheduled and shifted to vote-by-mail. Your contribution today can help us reach out to voters about the changes and remind them how important it is to vote for our candidates.

United we stand,
