John,

I hope this note finds you well. We are living in unusual times. Know that you are part of the Voto Latino familia – and we haven’t stopped fighting for you. With the coronavirus pandemic continuing and the U.S. government responding, many of you may be wondering: how does the COVID-19 relief package and other decisions affect Latinos?

Yesterday I had the pleasure of talking with U.S. Representative Ruben Gallego of Arizona’s 7th district on Instagram Live about this very subject, including the coronavirus stimulus and how we protect the right to vote.

The relief package that Congress passed and President Trump signed into law last month may help many by providing a one-time stimulus check as well as interest-free loans for small businesses and others, but it lacked some key protections and aid for Latinos.

That’s why we believe the next relief package MUST contain the following:

*
Equity
for
vote-by-mail:
states
should
be
prohibited
from
claiming
federal
money
without
establishing
electoral
reforms
and
voter
protections
that
make
it
safe
and
accessible
for
every
voter
to
make
their
voice
heard;
Vote-by-mail
EXPANDS
voting
options!
*
Hazard
pay
and
universal
paid
sick
leave
for
all
essential
workers,
election
workers,
etc.,
regardless
of
immigration
status;
*
A
fix
to
allow
undocumented,
mixed-status,
and
ITIN
filers
to
claim
relief
money
too.

Not only must we ensure that everyone, regardless of immigration status, can benefit from the next stimulus package, but we need our leaders to step up and protect our right to vote – because last week, that didn’t happen. In Wisconsin, we saw Republican state legislators and conservative courts shut down a delay of the primary election, forcing voters to risk their health by voting in-person in the middle of a pandemic.

For the sake of our democracy and voters’ health, the next stimulus bill absolutely needs to include basic protections and preventative measures for voters , like making mail-in ballots available to everyone, providing free or pre-paid postage, allowing ballots postmarked on or before Election Day to count, reforming signature-matching laws, and letting community organizations to help collect and deliver voted, sealed ballots.

Voto Latino is pushing Congress for these critical protections and equitable relief for Latinos, as we continue to register 1 MILLION new voters before November’s general election.

We understand that this is an unusual time to request support. But the fight is on us. Please give only if you can – regardless, know that you are a valuable Voto Latino community member. We were here before COVID, during COVID and you better believe we will fight strong after COVID. Consider investing in us to help us continue to share crucial information with our community, register voters, and advocate for fair financial relief and voter protections by pitching in $10 or whatever you can today:
