John — We are
facing the most coordinated, sustained backlash against LGBTQ equality in
our lifetimes.

This year alone, more than 500 anti-LGBTQ bills have been filed in state
legislatures across the nation.

These continued restrictions and acts of hate against the LGBTQ community
— especially toward students, parents, and teachers — are cruel.

Everyone deserves to feel safe and be safe regardless of who they love or
how they identify. The coordinated legislative maneuvers and outright
violent attacks to threaten and intimidate transgender children and their
parents in particular are unconscionable.

We will not go back — we will not apologize for celebrating the strength
and diversity of our LGBTQ community.

It may seem unbelievable, but currently, the 1964 Civil Rights Act does
NOT explicitly prohibit discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation
or gender identity.

That’s unacceptable, and it’s why we must fight like hell to defend the
LGBTQ community from violence, intimidation, and outright discrimination
no matter what.

I'm an original cosponsor of the Equality Act to amend the 1964 Civil
Rights Act and establish clear protections against this form of
discrimination. And in the Senate, I'll vote to abolish the filibuster so
we can pass it with a simple majority once and for all.
