There are only two days left in the New York state legislative session and we need to act fast to ensure four key environmental justice bills pass. These bills will help protect our communities from lead and toxics, fight the build out of new fossil fuel infrastructure, and ensure that the public’s voice is heard when polluters look to put facilities in our communities.
In addition to the New York HEAT Act, which will end wasteful ratepayer subsidies to build out more gas infrastructure, and curb utility costs for the most energy burdened, we need your help to push the following bills over the finish line:
Lead Paint Right to Know Act: New York State leads the nation in cases of children with elevated blood levels. That is why we need to pass the Lead Paint Right to Know Act by June 6, as it will require disclosure of lead paint test reports in all real estate transactions so families can know whether their new home has lead paint.
Beauty Justice Act: Personal care products – everything from cosmetics to soaps and shampoos to hair straighteners – are largely unregulated, with far too many containing toxic ingredients that have been linked to serious health issues like cancer. That is why we need to pass the Beauty Justice Act by June 6, as it will ban most of these substances in New York State.
Enhanced Public Participation Act: New York State's Enhanced Public Participation Act requires applicants for major polluting projects looking to site in or near a disadvantaged community to submit an enhanced public participation plan for community engagement, giving communities like ours a voice in whether polluting facilities are built in our neighborhood. That is why we need to pass it by June 6.
You can help us make it past the finish line with these bills by stepping up to become and Environmental Justice Sustainer today. A generous supporter is matching all new sustainer gifts. If you become a sustainer today, you’ll double your impact and help us continue to push for environmental justice legislation that will protect the health of our communities and curb the use of fossil fuels.
