A brilliant former colleague

In case you missed the news, a couple months ago the CC team said goodbye to senior editor Amy Frykholm, who will be focusing on writing books and leading workshops for writers. I think I have been in denial about Amy’s departure because she is such a lovely colleague and friend. A small silver lining is that she is still a contributing editor and will write for us from time to time—like the June issue cover story, a fascinating and informative look at an effort to bring justice to the coffee industry.

I also love when our articles engage with each other. In our forthcoming July issue, Melissa Florer-Bixler describes what happened when she tried her best to get a sermon out of AI bot ChatGPT. Our editors reflect on the broader theme of technology’s inability to participate in deeply human interactions.

Our video of the week is the latest installment in what I should start labeling Chats with My Favorite Poet. I keep making videos with poet-theologian Bonnie Thurston, and it is a delight every time. In our new conversation, she reads and discusses a poem about birds and failure.

Coffee justice in Mexico

“Whereas the fair trade model pays farmers a guaranteed price for their crops, Café Justo keeps the entire means of production in the hands of farmers, from the moment of planting to the moment the consumer enjoys a cup of coffee.”

by Amy Frykholm

A pulpit without a context

“Several AI websites boasted that their products required no citations or acknowledgments. But whose ideas were these? Where did they come from?”

by Melissa Florer-Bixler

Video: Bonnie Thurston reads and discusses “Facing Failure”

Poet and theologian Bonnie Thurston talks with Jon about a recent poem in which she learns something from a wren.

A crushing lack of humanity

“Viewers experienced Apple’s ad as a dystopian nightmare tapping into their worst fears about tech.”

by the CC editors

Too much mystery?

“When our spiritual ancestors in the New Testament speak of mystery, it is never as an excuse to back away from deep engagement or risky articulation.”
