We are pleased to announce the winner of our most recent Monday Nature Mystery, Gary Nooger. (Please email your snail mail address and preference for a hat or tote bag to [email protected]).
Congratulations to Gary for identifying the Grey-cheeked Thrush (Catharus minimus). According to All About Birds, this species can be distinguished from most other thrushes by its more gray appearance, plainer face pattern, grayish lores and its faint, incomplete eyering. However it is identical to the Bicknell’s Thrush. Gray-cheeked and Bicknell’s Thrushes were only officially recognized as separate species in 1995. Monticello Park is one of the best places in our area to see this bird, and the best time to look for them is during the third week in May. You may wish to study up on other Thrush species to prepare for next week’s mystery.
