I hope you are having a safe and fun start to your summer. May was a busy month in Congress. We voted for and the President signed the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) reauthorization bill, which included key priorities that I worked hard to include in order to strengthen consumer rights and protect labor agreements. Airlines will now be required to refund consumers when a flight is canceled or significantly delayed, and refunds will be paid automatically. In addition, I successfully kept out a provision that would have raised the pilot retirement age, undermining hard-won labor agreements and compliance with international safety regulations. The FAA reauthorization bill also includes more than $3.18 billion for the Airport Improvement Program, which will help fund infrastructure improvements at more than 3,300 eligible airports, including Midway. Along with colleagues in the Senate, I introduced the Lead-Safe Housing for Kids Act. All children deserve to live in a lead-free home. But in neighborhoods with older housing stock, the risk of lead poisoning remains high, and that risk disproportionately falls on Latino, Black, and other underserved communities. This bill would ensure proactive, thorough testing is performed for lead paint hazards in federally assisted housing where children may be exposed. You can learn more about the bill here.

Finally, this month, Congress began the annual process of setting federal spending levels, called appropriations, for the upcoming fiscal year. As part of that process, I will be advocating to the House Appropriations Committee for federal spending priorities that benefit my constituents and district.

S.E. Gross Middle School Visits the Capitol

I welcomed 8th graders from S.E. Gross Middle School in Brookfield to the Capitol and answered their questions about public service and our work in Congress. I shared my thoughts about the importance of being civically engaged and urged this group of future leaders to stay involved.

Congressional Art Competition Winner

Congratulations to Chelsea from Hubbard High School on winning the 2024 Congressional Art Competition for IL-04. Her masterpiece is called “Am I A Burden?” and will be displayed in the U.S. Capitol for a full year. Chelsea’s artwork reminds us of the importance of ensuring the elderly have access to adequate health care and other supportive services.

Illinois LULAC State Conference

I was a keynote speaker at the State Conference of the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) in Illinois, where I shared an update about my work in Congress to secure work permits for immigrants and keep mixed-status families together. Thank you to Reverend Emma Lozano and Cecilia Garcia, two “guerreras,” from my district for the invitation and for leading efforts with LULAC in our state.

Memorial Day

On Memorial Day, we recognize the brave service members who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country.

I honored fallen heroes in Brookfield and Elmhurst alongside Gold Star families and constituents. Today and every day, we honor them.
