John, I was
looking through some old family photos, and I found one that really
resonated with me. I wanted to show you.
Eve and I, with little Lexi and Eli, at the Liberty Bell in Philadelphia’s
Independence National Historical Park:

While Lexi (maybe) and Eli (certainly) may have been too young to remember
this trip, it was important to me to instill in our kids growing up the
pride and patriotism in our country that so strongly motivates my service
in Congress.
[ [link removed] ]I want to talk to you about that today, but while I still have your
attention — can you please make a donation of any amount to support my
campaign for Senate ahead of this month’s important FEC deadline? If you
are not yet convinced, read on. I think you’ll like what I have to say.
We took this trip for the same reason that we had Lexi spend so much time
in our congressional campaign offices when she was growing up.

Why she was attached at the hip (literally!) while I spoke at our
district’s Fourth of July parade.

Even why I brought her with me to the Capitol, where she met
then-Democratic Whip Nancy Pelosi and had plenty of questions about what
kind of a whip Ms. Pelosi had (and much as I hate to contradict the future
speaker, it was not a candy whip as represented).

We brought Lexi and Eli to Independence Hall so that we could show them
(and recount in the years since) the qualities of what it means to be
patriotic — to be proud to be an American.
In recent years, Donald Trump has tried to twist patriotism into something
unrecognizable. Into something that pits one American against another,
instead of inspiring us to build a more perfect union.
He and his MAGA followers can try to drape their authoritarianism in the
American flag, but they don’t know what it means to make this country a
better place for everyone. They will never know. But I’m sure you do. It’s
why you’re here.
So yes, we wanted to instill those qualities in our kids growing up…but in
the interest of completeness, I also just wanted to spend more time with
them, to share the things I loved with them. It’s just really challenging
raising two small kids while being in office. As any parent can tell you,
every moment you get is precious. And I am grateful to Eve every day for
being the rock our family needed during the many long days and nights I
spent on the House floor.
As it turned out, my kids helped me enormously as a public official,
serving as my North Star. I wanted our two kids to be proud of what their
dad did when he had a chance to serve when it mattered the most. That
feeling only intensified when I had to stand up to the most corrupt
president of our lifetimes when I had to investigate and impeach him for
his abuse of power and worked on the January 6 Committee.
[ [link removed] ]That is my message today,
John, and if it resonates,
then I am humbly asking you to pitch in a contribution of
$3 or any
amount. Because I cannot win this fight alone.
