Hello,

In this week’s edition, I discuss the effort needed to put into marriage, including the specificities regarding communication. Then, I share a special release from my We Who Wrestle With God tour while in Nashville, Tennessee. From the archives, I revisit a lecture in which I discuss the fact of there being just a small percentage of people who are hyperproductive.

Advice

Put Forth Effort In Your Relationship

People tend to think all romantic interaction should be spontaneous. If that is your theory and you are going to get married, you might as well just give up right now. When you are married, especially when you have little kids and you both have a job, you are so busy that the probability you are going to find time for spontaneous mutual interaction decreases to zero. So if that is what you are hoping for, then you are never going to have it. What you have to do is make time for each other.

When you are dating and establishing the relationship, you put effort into it. You go out for dinner, you dress up to some degree, and you try to present yourself in an acceptable manner. Then, you hope there is going to be a positive consequence, and you are going to find each other attractive. But people somehow think that once they are married, the same amount of effort is not necessary — and that is wrong. In fact, more effort is necessary on the same front. You have to think it through.

My rule of thumb regarding how much time to spend together each week for the sake of the intimate element of your relationship is derived from clinical observations: You need to spend 90 minutes talking with your partner each week. That means telling each other about your lives, staying in touch so that you each know what the other is up to, discussing what needs to be done to keep the household running smoothly, and laying out some mutually acceptable vision of how the next week or the next months are going to go.

While on his Beyond Order tour, Jordan discussed the correlation between living well and thinking well. Thinking guides our actions, and in order to act according to our values, we must be free to do so. As an existential thinker, Jordan adheres to the belief that we act out our values and must mitigate life’s suffering with a worthy challenge. To hear Jordan’s thoughts on these topics and more, watch episodes from his various tour stop locations, with no tour destination being the same. The Problem Of Physical Death Was Solved Centuries Ago

When I had little kids, I thought about there being a terrible fragility to children. Adults are fragile too, obviously. We all are because we are mortal and vulnerable and prone to suffering. But I thought about my three-year-old son; he has this terrible vulnerability. Wouldn’t it be good if that could be ameliorated? You can do that two ways: You can institute protective mechanisms that shield them from the depredations of the world or you can strive to make them into the sort of competent people who can take the world on their own.

The Sins Of Adam And The True Nature Of Eve

This week, I released footage from my We Who Wrestle With God tour filmed in Nashville, Tennessee. In this lecture, I discuss how your worldview frames your story and how chaos manifests as infinite possibility without aim. I also talk through the biblical role of women and the original sins of Adam.

There’s A Certain Number Of People Who Are Hyperproductive

The square root of the number of people in a particular domain do 50% of the work. Unfortunately, this means incompetence grows exponentially and competence grows linearly. While getting out of this predicament is multifaceted and the data is still being studied, it is information worth knowing.
