The U.S. Postal Service is probably our most trusted government agency. It's been around as long as the United States. The Constitution grants Congress the power to establish it. But* the Postal Service is under threat of elimination *- a more serious threat than ever before.

RootsAction has been part of successful efforts to save the Postal Service from right-wing attacks in Congress before, and we can be again. But we need everyone to help. *Please click here to email your Representative and Senators.* [ [link removed] ]

""[T]he Postal Service will not survive the summer without immediate help from Congress and the White House. Every community in America relies on the Postal Service to deliver vital goods and services, including life-saving medications. The Postal Service needs America's help, and we must answer this call.""
- Rep. Carolyn B. Maloney, the Chairwoman of the Committee on Oversight and Reform, and Rep. Gerry Connolly, the Chairman of the Subcommittee on Government Operations

*The Postal Service provides universal service to all Americans - rich or poor, urban or rural. *The work of its heroic employees is critical to our needs during the coronavirus pandemic, including the need for voting by mail.

Trump says he opposes voting by mail and that if voting is made too easy, *"you'd never have a Republican elected in this country again."* Trump has threatened to veto a coronavirus bailout for the Postal Service, which is rapidly losing revenue.

The Postal Service provides more than *600,000 good and largely unionized jobs*. As much as its politically undermined budgets allow, it provides reliable convenient service to all, including to the most remote locations, as well as creating the possibility of a legitimate election in a time of necessary sheltering in place.

All of that makes the Postal Service a target for destruction and privatization. Congressional saboteurs have required that the Postal Service invest in retiree health benefits in a manner required of not a single other government agency or private corporation, adding to the Postal Service's financial difficulties instead of alleviating them.

Trump has his own bizarre motivations beyond his opposition to voting by mail. He claims that the Postal Service benefits Amazon, whose owner also owns the "Washington Post", which Trump dislikes. But basing public policy around such personal animosities is outrageous and should not be tolerated.

*The Postal Service says it will run out of cash by the end of September without Congressional action. Numerous private companies, some of which had no need of it, have already been bailed out.*
