John,

Breathing clean air is a human right. And yet, more than a million people in our state live with harmful and unjust levels of air pollution.

If you live in one of the 16 communities [[link removed]] with the worst air quality in our state, your life expectancy may be an average of two and a half years shorter than the state average as a whole. You’re more at risk for asthma, heart disease, and strokes. If you’re older than 65 and live in one of these communities, you’re twice as likely than the statewide average to die from illnesses linked to breathing fine particles.

Air pollution is also closely tied to racist policies like redlining. While people of color make up one-third of Washington’s population, more than half of residents in communities with the most polluted air are people of color.

The Climate Commitment Act requires the state to begin to address these inequalities by taking immediate action to improve air quality in neighborhoods with the worst air pollution.

The state Department of Ecology is building a new grant program, funded by the Climate Commitment Act, that will provide millions of dollars for community-led projects to reduce air pollution. These grants will be focused on solutions designed by, and for, the people who are most affected by polluted air. Consultation with Tribal Nations is ongoing regarding Tribal lands and communities. Sign up for one of two online listening sessions, to make your voice heard and to help ensure that these grants will be equitable, effective, and make a real difference:
