Federal Update

Congress Considers Funding for Title X and Teen Pregnancy Prevention Programs

Power to Decide recently submitted testimony to the House and Senate appropriations committees requesting increased investments in programs and policies that promote reproductive well-being for all. Specifically, we requested $512 million for the Title X Family Planning program, $150 million for the Teen Pregnancy Prevention Program, and final appropriations bills free of the Hyde and Weldon Amendments and other anti-abortion provisions.

After various hearings on the President’s proposed budget, on May 15 the House scheduled its mark ups for the Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education appropriations bill for June 27 and July 10. It is important that Congress invests in these critical programs and policies to expand access to sexual and reproductive health education and services. We urge you to contact your members of Congress and tell them to invest in reproductive well-being.

Senate to Vote on the Right to Contraception Act

The Senate will be voting on the Right to Contraception Act in early June. This landmark legislation would establish a federal right to access contraception and a corresponding right for providers to provide it. Blatant attacks and disinformation about contraception access continue apace, making it critical that policymakers work to protect and expand access to the full range of contraceptive methods. Contact your legislators and tell them to vote Yes on the Right to Contraception Act.

State Update

Effective Date of Extreme Arizona Abortion Ban Pushed Back Until the Fall

Arizona's 1864 total abortion ban will not go into effect before September 26, thanks to an enforcement delay granted by the Arizona Supreme Court. Until then, patients can access abortion through 15 weeks. The ban may be in place for a short time this fall before its repeal takes effect. The repeal of the ban will not be in effect until 90 days after the legislative session ends, but its adjournment date is not yet known. AbortionFinder.org will continue to have up-to-date information on local, verified abortion care providers and support services.
