The Age of Recoupment: by David Dayen and Lindsay Owens
Dear reader,
It seems like everywhere you turn, consumers are being gouged. Price hikes are nothing new, but in 2024, they’ve been reinvented, and companies have a variety of tricks and questionable business practices employed to capture more of your money and grow record profits at the expense of consumers.

That’s why we teamed up with Groundwork Collaborative for our June print issue, to explore how these pricing strategies work to wring as much out of the American public as possible, and how they affect your everyday life.

To kick off the series, Lindsay Owens, Executive Director of Groundwork Collaborative, and I wrote about the age of recoupment: how corporations have shifted from indiscriminately cutting costs to raising prices. Prices are becoming increasingly unmoored from the fundamentals, like the cost of labor or materials. In its place, a new corporate credo has emerged: The best price is the one consumers are willing to pay.

You can read the piece here.

Over the next two weeks, we’ll be rolling out the June special issue one story at a time. The issue covers everything you need to know about how corporations rip the public off, from surveillance pricing to junk fees to medical bills and grocery pricing. You can read the issue online as it comes out here.
Every day, our small but mighty team works hard to bring you the news you need on a shoestring budget.
