Hello Friend,
Welcome to my e-newsletter, the Ready Room. As a retired Naval Aviator, the Ready Room is special to me because it’s where fellow aviators meet to brief and debrief missions. This is my weekly briefing to you on my mission in Congress. Please follow me on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and YouTube for regular updates on how my team and I are working to serve you in Congress.
REMEMBERING OUR FALLEN HEROES
Every Memorial Day, we honor the brave men and women who laid down their lives to defend our nation and the freedoms we cherish. This year, I can think of no one more worthy to remember than Florida’s own Major Thomas McGuire, a combat pilot killed in action during World War II.
To save another pilot in his team from attack, Maj. McGuire risked a hazardous maneuver at low altitude, crashed and was reported missing in action. He was awarded the Medal of Honor in 1947 for his heroic actions to save his wingman’s life. Maj. McGuire set an inspiring example in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service.
Earlier this year, I introduced H.R. 6810 to immortalize his legacy for future generations and rename a Sebring, Florida post office in his honor. I expect this bill to come up for a vote in the near future. Click here to learn more.
DEMANDING THE WITHDRAW OF BURDENSOME EMISSION RULE
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recently released restrictive greenhouse gas emission standards for “heavy trucks,” applying to delivery trucks, tractors, busses and semis. The new regulations are part of the Biden Administration’s larger climate agenda designed to ban combustion engines and fast track zero-emission electric vehicles.
This EPA action will force farms and businesses to foot the bill for impractical vehicles they don’t want and can’t afford. Electric trucks, for instance, cost an average of 122% more than a normal semi and can only travel up to 500 miles per charge. They also require a lot of electricity, potentially causing strain on electric grids in rural communities. The cost to comply ultimately will force small companies out of business and increase shortages and prices around the country.
That's why I'm joining Rep. Randy Feenstra and House colleagues to urge the EPA to withdraw the heavy-duty truck rule to protect consumer choice, affordability and efficiency for farmers, businesses and rural communities.
