Friends,
As many of you already know, our campaign is doing everything we can to help the people of our community during this crisis.
Yesterday alone, we made supply deliveries to over 60 families who were in desperate need of groceries and toiletries. We are able to do this because of your incredible generosity and support. The supplies you ship and donations you contribute help bring essential resources to a community that is fighting for survival.
Our campaign knows first hand how devastating this virus truly is. Two members of our team recently lost relatives to COVID-19. Thousands of families like ours have lost loved ones, but can't afford to mourn because they need to make rent, pay bills or just put food on the table. Loss is tragic at any time, but being unable to grieve because you lost your job or can't get a check that was promised, makes it that much harder.
What is occuring in Southeast Queens, Nassau County, and throughout the country is large scale tragedy, and should be treated as such. People need time to grieve, time to process what is going on and time to get back on their feet. That is why we must pressure the government to institute a national rent freeze. We need monthly checks of $2,000 to support folks through this prolonged quarantine. We need to make it illegal for companies of all sizes to fire employees. All corporations must be mandated to pay their employees and 100% cover paid sick leave. For smaller businesses, who this may be more difficult for, the federal government must issue the neccesary loans required to keep workers paid and protected.
During this pandemic, one thing has become very clear. The stimulus bill is not helping the people in my community. Folks don't have money for food or cleaning supplies, and can't leave their homes because they didn't get PPE in time. Small business owners are unable to get information from their banks regarding loans. Tens of thousands of people have lost their jobs and are unsure when unemployment checks will arrive. The situation was already difficult, but this 'stimulus' has yet to help the people of New York's 5th Congressional district.
Now it's up to us to help each other get through this crisis, to take power back from the elite few who allowed this economic situation to spiral out of control, and to elect better representatives that will always fight to protect us.
If you, your family or loved ones need essential supplies, please let us know by filling out this form. We are here to help.
Please stay safe, you are in our thoughts,
Shaniyat Chowdhury
Because of your support and generosity, our Community
Care Outreach program has been a massive succes. We
have reached hundreds of families and delivered thousands
of dollars in supplies. In fact, it has been such a success
that we are at our max capacity. In order to continue
expanding and deliverying the supplies my community
needs, we have to hire several additional staff members.
This is going to be difficult financially, but absolutely
necessary to the continued delivery of essential supplies in
NY-5.
Can you make a contribution to help us hire
additional staff? More staff means more deliveries
to families struggling to survive right now.
