Democrat Rep Asks NY Governor Kathy Hochul to Pardon Trump

Fox News: A House Democrat who previously posed a primary challenge to President Biden called for New York Gov. Kathy Hochul to pardon former President Donald Trump for “the good of the country,” insisting his conviction is only helping the presumptive Republican nominee’s campaign. Phillips’ remarks about the “record” fundraising came after the Trump campaign announced Friday evening that it had raised nearly $53 million in the 24 hours after Trump was found guilty of all 34 felony counts in his criminal trial in New York City (Fox News). Dean Phillips: Donald Trump is a serial liar, cheater, and philanderer, a six-time declarer of corporate bankruptcy, an instigator of insurrection, and a convicted felon who thrives on portraying himself as a victim. Gov. Kathy Hochul should pardon him for the good of the country (X).

Everyone Understands Trump’s Trial Was an Unprecedented Farce
Albert Mohler: Former president of the United States is now a convicted felon. It will take some time for that fact to settle on the nation’s conscience. Before turning to the many implications of this verdict, we need to let the moral seriousness of the tragedy settle on us. Whatever happens in days to come, this verdict represents a major turning point in American history. Americans need to think carefully about what all of this means. We all know that Americans face a dangerous political moment, with constitutional dangers and legal complexities tossed about as weapons of political warfare. It seems just about impossible that we are overestimating the importance of this moment. I think Alvin Bragg’s prosecution of Donald Trump, coming as a result of a campaign pledge he made when he ran for Manhattan district attorney, was a political stunt from the beginning. Bragg had to construct an argument without legal precedent to press felony charges against Trump, and it is hard to see Bragg’s office taking a similar approach to any other defendant. The bigger scandal is that the forces allied against the former president were so blatantly political and the entire process was timed to inflict maximum political damage just as the 2024 presidential campaign was hitting high gear (World).

CNN’s Legal Analyst Excoriates New York’s Case Against Trump
Fox News: CNN senior legal analyst Elie Honig criticized the New York criminal case against Donald Trump as an “unjustified mess” in a scathing analysis piece, saying prosecutors “contorted the law” to ensnare the former president. “Prosecutors got their man, for now at least — but they also contorted the law in an unprecedented manner in their quest to snare their prey,” Honig wrote in New York magazine (Fox News). Townhall: The jury instruction phase “blew” Honig’s mind, which was the reluctance to elaborate on the “other crime” that served as the basis for Bragg’s case against Trump. Only during closing arguments was this revealed, which is where the due process concern rests. As he put it, Trump is guilty of a charge that “falls within the same technical criminal classification as shoplifting a Snapple and a bag of Cheetos from a bodega” (Townhall). Collin Rugg: Alvin Bragg’s former colleague and current CNN legal analyst is calling out the rigged Trump case, even accusing Judge Juan Merchan of violating the law. Elie Honig says the trial “blew his mind” as he called it an “unjustified mess.” “The judge donated money – a tiny amount of $35, but in plain violation of a rule prohibiting New York judges from making political donations of any kind to a pro-Biden, anti-Trump political operation,” he wrote in the NY Magazine. “The charges against Trump are obscure and nearly entirely unprecedented. In fact, no state prosecutor… has ever charged federal election laws as a direct or predicate state crime, against anyone, for anything.” “The charges against Trump aren’t just unusual. They’re bespoke, seemingly crafted individually for the former president and nobody else,” he said as he called the case “Frankenstein” because it was pieced together. During a segment on CNN, Honig said his mind was blown when the judge determined that the jury didn’t need to know what the other crime Trump committed was (X).

Biden’s DOJ Sentences Pro-Life Activist to Prison
Daily Wire: The Department of Justice announced on Friday that 75-year-old Paula Paulette Harlow was sentenced to two years in prison for violating the Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances Act by taking part in a “conspiracy” to block pregnant women from entering an abortion clinic in Washington, D.C. Handy, who was also recently sued by the Biden administration for violating the FACE Act at two abortion facilities in Ohio, was sentenced on May 14 to almost five years in prison and three years of supervised release for her role in the demonstration at the D.C. abortion clinic. Seventy-six-year-old Joan Bell was sentenced to 27 months in prison and Jean Marshall, 74, was also slapped with a two-year sentence (Daily Wire).

Appeals Court Dismisses Effort to Remove Trump-Appointed Judge Presiding Over His Classified Documents Case
National Review: An appeals-court judge has shut down efforts to remove Trump-appointed judge Aileen Cannon from the former president’s classified-documents case. Eleventh Circuit Court of Appeals chief judge William Pryor, in a May 22 order, rejected four complaints against Cannon for their lack of evidence to suggest that Cannon is engaging in misconduct: “These complaints appear to be part of an orchestrated campaign, as described in Judicial-Conduct Rule 10(b) and the accompanying commentary. The Chief Circuit Judge of the Eleventh Circuit has considered and dismissed four of those orchestrated complaints as merits-related and as based on allegations lacking sufficient evidence to raise an inference that misconduct has occurred.” The judge adds: “Although many of the complaints allege an improper motive in delaying the case, the allegations are speculative and unsupported by any evidence. The Complaints also do not establish that Judge Cannon was required to recuse herself from the case because she was appointed by then-President Trump” (National Review). CNBC: The Florida federal judge overseeing the criminal classified documents case against former President Donald Trump has been the target of more than 1,000 complaints in just one week this month raising allegations of her handling of the case, a top appeals court judge revealed in an order. The complaints against Judge Aileen Cannon have come to light amid renewed criticism by some legal observers and Trump opponents that she is slow-walking the criminal case against the former president to ensure it does not go to trial before the presidential election (CNBC).

Large Groups of Illegal Immigrants From China, Jordan and Turkey Caught at Border
Fox News: Over 3,500 Chinese nationals were encountered crossing the southern border illegally in May, along with hundreds of Jordanian, Turkish and Mauritanian nationals, according to Customs and Border Protection (CBP) source. The vast majority (98%) were encountered in the San Diego Sector, which has emerged as a top border-crossing point, even as numbers across the border have decreased in recent months. While the Tucson Sector in Arizona saw the most encounters, with over 33,000 illegal encounters, San Diego was a close second with over 32,000. The number of Chinese nationals has increased enormously since 2021. There were 1,970 encounters in FY 2022 and over 24,000 in FY 2023, and so far there have been over 24,200 encounters so far this fiscal year (Fox News). Bill Melugin: I’m told approximately 118,000 illegal aliens were apprehended by Border Patrol at the southern border during the month of May, 6,300+ of which were “special interest aliens” coming from countries with potential national security concerns (X).

Biden Openly Brags About Defying Supreme Court in Cancelling Student Loans
Townhall: For months, President Joe Biden has been defying the U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling on his plan for student loan debt “forgiveness,” even bragging about it. He did so again on Wednesday, being all to proud to even post a clip to his political account. The timeline becomes even more relevant given that the Biden White House and Biden reelection campaign, as well as the president himself, talked about respect for “the law” (Townhall). Joe Biden: The Supreme Court tried to block me from relieving student debt. But they didn’t stop me. I’ve relieved student debt for over 5 million Americans. I’m going to keep going (X).

Northern California Wildfire Injures Two Firefighters, Forces Residents to Evacuate Area
Associated Press: California firefighters aided by aircraft battled a wind-driven wildfire that continued not only burning but spreading early Sunday in an area straddling the San Francisco Bay Area and central California, authorities said. The Corral Fire began Saturday afternoon near the city of Tracy, 60 miles (96 kilometers) east of San Francisco, and the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in the city of Livermore. Dark plumes of smoke traveled high into the sky over the fire area comprised mostly of grassy hills. Early Sunday, the blaze appeared to be growing, fueled by hot and dry conditions in California. Cal Fire updated the size of the fire to 19.5 square miles, up from 17.2 square miles late Saturday (Associated Press). CNN: Two Alameda County firefighters were injured while responding to the fire, Cal Fire Battalion Chief Josh Silveira told CNN. They had minor to moderate injuries and were transported to a local hospital for evaluation and treatment. The fire could spread farther with gusty winds expected to continue overnight in the area with speeds up to 40 mph. Sweltering heat into the upcoming week could multiply dangerous fire conditions (CNN).
