“Guilty.”

- Manhattan jury conviction

(repeated for all 34 felony counts)

The two-week recess at the legislature has brought the session to a lull. We return to the House on Tuesday to vote on the Borderless Border Initiative, HCR 2060. This bill recently passed the Senate along party lines, with Senator Bennett supporting it after the removal of provisions for DACA recipients.

While acknowledging that our immigration system needs dire improvements—for  legal paths to citizenship and for those seeking asylum—I do not believe this SB 1070-esque solution addresses the realities or the root causes of the immigration issues we are currently experiencing.

The majority of those making the dangerous trek across the border are women with children and families. Once processed, 90% of immigrants are then moved to areas outside of Arizona.

  • Bipartisan immigration reform needs attention at the federal level, which is where the solutions worked out now sit collecting dust on Republicans desks. They would seemingly rather fearmonger and exploit a problem over delivering solutions for people.

  • HCR 2060 is unconstitutional, as we know from the long taxpayer-funded court fights we had with SB 1070.

  • Enforcing HCR 2060 is vague, discriminatory, and jeopardizes public safety resources while also adding hundreds of millions of dollars to prison funding costs.

Business, faith, humanitarian, and community groups have rallied against HCR 2060 and voiced there opposition. You can add yours to keep this off the ballot by reaching out to Republican members of the house here.

With kindness,

Sarah

From the State House to the Supreme Court

2021 photo of the flag in the State House

There's major national news as political controversies and groundbreaking firsts unfold for…flags. Justice Thomas is catching a break from the spotlight as the scrutiny turns to Justice Alito over his public ties to extremist ideologies in the form of flags displayed outside his home. Specifically, ones that were prominently on featured during the January 6th Insurrection and also found in our State House.

One of the main reasons I entered local politics was to defend Arizona from extremism and to ensure the state I love is governed with integrity. Appointed in late fall of 2021, I began preparing for the session by talking to constituents. While at one’s door, I commented on their early October Christmas tree that was already up and glowing bright. Their response was revelatory — it was their "appeal to heaven" so "God would smite President Biden and return Trump to the White House."  This prompted me to research Christian nationalism and how the pine tree flag had been hijacked to now represent violently restoring political order to the (white) Christian world.

Two months later, during my first week in the House, you can imagine my stunned surprise to walk out of an elevator straight into an 'Appeal to Heaven' flag. This flag, prominently displayed in full view of the second floor, was deeply problematic to see and signaled to me how dangerously close Arizona was to MAGA extremism. How did it get here? How long had it been here? I immediately went looking for answers but found few.

After several months of raising the issue, the flag was quietly removed one weekend towards the end of the session. Its presence was never officially acknowledged or explained by the House leadership. Although the flag is no longer there, questions about its origin remain. The connection between this ‘Appeal to Heaven’ flag in Justice Alito’s home and in our own People’s House shows the depth of extremism permeating our sacred spaces of democracy.

There should be no acceptance for undemocratic ideologies in our country. Arizona voters have demonstrated their refusal to align with unchecked extremism and will continue to this upcoming election. Stay vigilant and don't hesitate to speak up.

In This Together

Our motto is: if we're going to knock on doors, we might as well spread the word about other great candidates and their races too!

This weekend's efforts were in collaboration with two fantastic parents running for the Osborn School District Governing Board: current President Ed Hermes and recently appointed member Rhiannon Ford. We had a wonderful Sunday morning eating donuts at Short Leash in the Melrose District and then connecting with hundreds of voters.

A big thank you to everyone who joined us! And special thanks to Rhiannon and Ed for being such dedicated public education parents and leaders.
