Andrew Garbarino (R-NY), David Valadao (R-CA), and Brian Fitzpatrick (R-PA) would authorize federal funds to rehabilitate, modernize, and construct facilities and infrastructure at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA) in Kings Point, N.Y. 'Maritime security is critical to our national security, and yet the academy has been allowed to fall into disrepair, threatening recruitment efforts as well as the quality of education the academy can provide,' Rep. Garbarino said. 'With this legislation, we aim to upgrade and modernize the USMMA’s facilities so that we may continue to produce best-in-class mariners and ensure the strength of our national sea power.' The congressman on May 22 sponsored H.R. 8498 alongside 10 original cosponsors, including Rep. Valadao, Rep. Fitzpatrick, and U.S. Rep. Tom Suozzi (D-NY), to authorize funds that would support the implementation of the Full Speed Ahead infrastructure plan created by The Maritime Security Infrastructure Council to address critical infrastructure needs at the USMMA. Specifically, funding would be authorized from fiscal years (FYs) 2024 through 2034, with funding in FY 2025 totaling $54 million for design and planning purchases at the USMMA, according to the text of the bill. " Read The Full Article Here. WHAT'S NEW IN NY-02 Andrew Recognizes SWAT School Graduates The Suffolk Police SWAT School Graduation took place this week led by Suffolk Police Emergency Services. Police officers are trained from Suffolk County Police Department, Nassau County Police Department, Southampton Police Department, Riverhead Police Department, and East Hampton Police Department. Graduates were exposed to intense training to prepare them for public safety challenges. Andrew congratulates graduates on this accomplishment and Provided Congressional Certificates of Recognition. Girl Scouts of Suffolk County Hold Gold Award Ceremony This week, Girl Scouts of Suffolk County held its Gold Awards Ceremony. These Girl Scouts earned this accomplishment by using everything they’ve learned as a Girl Scout to solve a problem in their community or make a lasting change in their world. Andrew commends them for their passion and commitment to service for their community. CASEWORK HIGHLIGHT: Aiding 9/11 First Responder A retired police officer who became disabled as a result of 9/11 rescue and recovery efforts filed an amended claim with the September 11 Victims Compensation Fund ( VCF). After waiting long past the stated timeframe for his claim to be resolved, he contacted Andrew's office for assistance. Andrew's casework team was able to ensure his claim was reviewed and this 9/11 first responder received the claim he was owed. Andrew knows how frustrating dealing with bureaucracy can be. That is why he has an entire team dedicated to helping constituents get what they need from the government. KEEPING UP WITH CONGRESS Andrew Votes To Preserve American Voting Rights The House of Representatives recently passed H.R. 192, which would repeal the D.C. Council’s Local Resident Voting Rights Amendment Act of 2022 and prevent individuals who are not United States citizens from voting in local elections in the District of Columbia. The right to vote in U.S. elections is reserved for American citizens alone. Andrew will always fight to preserve American voting rights. Thanks for reading!
