You may remember McKay as the director of Don’t Look Up, the climate change denial film that broke big a couple of years ago.
McKay intended his film to be a wake-up call to the climate emergency. The movie was picked apart as a (completely valid) media critique and lauded for its dark humor – but on serious climate action, our society hit the snooze button once again.
We’re at a stage now that the experts and pundits largely agree and willingly admit that the “must not exceed” 1.5°C threshold set by the Paris Climate Accord in 2015 is still the point of no return.
But none of them are talking about the fact we surpassed 1.6°C already this year. And none of them are acting like we’re in a state of emergency.
