Hurricane season officially starts on June 1st and with an above average season expected, it's crucial to ensure that you and your family are prepared for any potential storms. Here are some essential tips to help you get ready and stay safe during this time:

Create an Emergency Kit: 
Buy your emergency kit items early in the hurricane season. Make sure your kit includes
  • Non-perishable food and water (at least a 3-day supply)
  • Medications and medical supplies
  • Battery-powered or hand-crank radio
  • Flashlights and extra batteries
  • First aid kit
  • Personal hygiene items
  • Important documents (insurance policies, identification)
  • Cash and credit cards
  • Extra clothing and blankets
  • Tools and supplies for securing your home
     

Protecting your Home:

Take steps to protect your home from potential storm and flooding damage. Be sure to install storm shutters or board up windows with plywood, secure loose outdoor items like furniture, grills, and decorations, ensure that your landscaping has been kept up to date, and keep gutters and drains free of debris. Prepare for potential damages by purchasing a flood insurance plan and participate in the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP).

REMEMBER: If your home was rebuilt through the Texas General Land Office’s Homeowner Assistance Program, and is located in a floodplain, flood insurance must be maintained in perpetuity to be eligible for future government assistance.
