The new daily progestin-only birth control pill, Opill, is now available over-the-counter, revolutionizing access to contraception. However, the current price of $20 for a one-month supply is too high for many people.

Although the Affordable Care Act requires most private health insurance plans to cover FDA-approved contraceptives, they often demand a prescription. This creates unnecessary barriers, especially for young people and those working to make ends meet.

Research shows that both adults and young people would be more likely to use an over-the-counter birth control pill if it were covered by insurance. 

The Biden Administration can act and ensure that over-the-counter birth control is fully covered by all insurance plans, including Medicaid, without requiring a prescription.

- 88% of young people reported difficulty accessing a birth control prescription.

- 55% faced so many barriers they couldn’t get on birth control pills at all.

- 1 out of 3 young people listed affordability as one of their main barriers to access.
