Pangolin pups ride on their mother's tail for safety during their first few months. When frightened, the adults curl up into a tight ball to protect the pups, making them easy pickings for poachers.

Pangolins are the most trafficked mammal in the world.

In a single week last year, 25 tons of their scales — representing as many as 35,000 individual pangolins — were confiscated in a poaching bust. They urgently need protection.

The United States is one of the world's top importers of wildlife, responsible for an estimated 20% of the global wildlife market.

That's why we've called for an end to commercial wildlife trade, and why we launched a lawsuit to protect pangolins under the Endangered Species Act.

This is a critical time for wildlife. The administration is using the pandemic as cover to both take away protections from wildlife and pillage public lands and habitat.

Just last week Interior Secretary David Bernhardt proposed opening more than 2 million acres of wildlife refuges to let hunters shoot migratory birds, bobcats, foxes, bears and even alligators.

Trump is fast-tracking a massive oil development in the western Arctic. This disastrous project would put oil wells in the habitat of caribou, migratory birds and polar bears.

And as Congress works on relief bills due to the pandemic, Big Oil and Big Agriculture are elbowing their way to the front of the line to receive huge giveaways. Trump's EPA is even stopping nationwide enforcement of legally mandated public health and environmental protections — indefinitely.

Meanwhile, laws that save wildlife, from the Endangered Species Act to the Migratory Bird Treaty Act and others, are being watered down.
