Continue reading this week’s edition to learn more about my efforts to advocate for continued container shipping operations at Port of Portland, some of my meetings in the district, and much more. | MY OFFICE IS HERE TO HELP YOU – SEE WHAT OREGONIANS ARE SAYING! My most important task as your voice in Washington, D.C. is to make sure that the federal government is working effectively for you. To that end, providing efficient constituent service is my number one priority. My office is here to help you navigate the federal bureaucracy, which is often complicated and complex. We have successfully helped hundreds of constituents with federal agency complications, including at the: ✅ VA ✅ State Department ✅ IRS ✅ USCIS ✅ FAA ... and many other agencies. But you don’t have to take my word for it – check out what Oregonians have to say about our services by clicking below, and please don't hesitate to reach out if you are experiencing trouble with the federal government by visiting my website here: https://chavez-deremer.house.gov/services/help-federal-agency | SUCCESSFULLY ADVOCATING FOR SHIPPING CONTAINER SERVICE TO CONTINUE AT PORT OF PORTLAND’S TERMINAL 6 Late last month, I wrote to Governor Kotek urging the state to do everything possible to continue container shipping service at Port of Portland’s Terminal 6 (T6). I was concerned by the adverse economic consequences the sudden decision to terminate container shipping could have on Oregon’s economy – T6 supports more than 1,500 jobs, $300 million in exported goods, and 25 percent of all Oregon goods traveling internationally rely on this terminal for shipping. Many businesses and workers already face challenging economic conditions, including high interest rates and elevated prices. If immediate action hadn’t been taken and T6 was allowed to close, businesses that rely on container shipping could have experienced major supply chain disruptions and hundreds of workers could have lost their jobs. That’s why I was glad to see the governor listen to our calls for action – addressing the Port’s financial challenges will prevent further economic disruption. I enjoyed visiting Simnitt Nursery in Canby to learn more about their business and discuss nursery-related provisions in the Farm Bill. I was honored to receive the Oregon Association of Nurseries’ Legislator of the Year Award last year, and I’ll continue serving as a strong voice for their priorities as we work to get the Farm Bill across the finish line! | This week, I also had the opportunity to visit Concorde Career College's Portland campus to discuss the programs they offer, enrollment, and how they are working to meet the needs of their students. As a member of the Education and Workforce Committee, I'll keep working to improve access to diverse educational opportunities for students! | OREGON’S INDEPENDENT VOICE IN CONGRESS We can’t be one sided – in this divided country, and in this divided Congress, the only way to get good policy done is to work across the aisle. I’ll continue to be Oregon’s independent voice in Congress and work to deliver thoughtful, bipartisan results for the 5th District! | ICYMI: FARM BILL PASSES HOUSE AG COMMITTEE In case you missed it in last week’s newsletter, the House Agriculture Committee passed a bipartisan Farm Bill early Friday morning. I sit on several subcommittees, including Forestry and Rural Development, where I brought the voices of Oregon farmers, foresters, and ranchers to the table and secured several of your priorities. For example, provisions from my bipartisan Jobs in the Woods Act would help address labor shortages in the timber industry. Legislation like the Fire Safe Electrical Corridors Act and the Wildfire Tech DEMO Act would take important steps to help prevent and fight wildfires. Other legislation, like the Expanding Child Care in Rural America Act and the Investing in Rural America Act, would give our rural communities more resources to help them grow and thrive.
