Bringing a Little Texas to Taiwan Congressman McCaul with Taiwan’s President Lai This week, I led a bipartisan congressional delegation to Taiwan to show my support for freedom and democracy amidst Chinese aggression. We were the first delegation to visit and speak with Taiwan’s new administration, including President Lai, Foreign Minister Lin, and other high-ranking defense and government officials. Taiwan is one of our most important and strategic partners. Approximately 90% of the world’s most advanced semiconductors — which power electronics, automobiles, and U.S. weapons systems — are made in Taiwan. If China invades Taiwan, this could lead to an “electronic shutdown.” The United States must return to President Reagan’s doctrine of peace through strength to deter our foreign adversaries. During my visit with President Lai, I gifted him a Stetson cowboy hat as a sign of friendship and support for our partner, Taiwan. The last time I visited Taiwan, China sanctioned me. This time they are using online trolls and propaganda accounts like “the Dragon of the East” to discredit my trip. This “Cowboy from the West” will not be intimidated by the CCP’s scare tactics. The United States must be a symbol of strength and democracy. Instead, the world is watching our judicial system being abused for political gain. The final verdict will be delivered on November 5th. Celebrating 100 Years of the United States Border Protection The Customs and Border Protection is on the frontline of the Biden administration’s border crisis. This week we celebrated 100 years of the United States Border Protection. I am grateful for our border patrol agent’s commitment to protect, defend, and secure our borders. I joined House Homeland Security Committee Republicans in introducing a resolution to show our support and gratitude for their service. These dedicated public servants and their families face challenges caused by the overwhelming number of illegal immigrants, drugs, cartels, and human traffickers coming across our borders. The House Homeland Security Committee and I will continue to ensure that our agent's receive the support needed to accomplish their crucial mission in the field, secure our nation’s borders, and protect their fellow Americans. This week, Rep. Mike Quigley and I introduced a resolution recognizing May 2024 as National Brain Tumor Awareness Month. Despite the large number of Americans who suffer from these conditions, there are very few treatment options for those fighting brain tumors. I am dedicated to working to find solutions to save thousands of lives, while honoring those who have passed away from these diseases. Read more here. Storm Damage Assistance I continue to monitor the deadly and devastating storms that recently hit the Houston area. If you or someone you know needs financial assistance because of the storms, the Houston Small Business Administration is offering disaster relief for those affected by the storms. There are disaster assistance resources from the federal government that are available to you found here or through the Small Business Administration which can be found here. FEMA is also providing assistance to those who have been affected, which can be found here. ICYMI: Rep.
