The final push for polio eradication
UNICEF is working on the front line of the fight against polio and the end could be in sight. Before the first vaccine was ushered in during the 1950s, polio was the world’s most feared disease. Now, after decades of work by UNICEF and partners, polio cases have been eradicated widely and are endemic to just two countries: Afghanistan and Pakistan. But conflict, climate disasters, displacement and vaccine misinformation are stalling efforts to reach some of the world's most marginalized children with lifesaving vaccines. Still, by land, air and sea, UNICEF and its dedicated team of vaccinators keep working to deliver for children.

Young people are turning climate anxiety into climate action
Young people don’t just represent the future. They are the changemakers of the present. Children and young people around the world are finding tangible solutions to the climate crisis, speaking out at major events and inspiring a groundswell of positive action. For many young people, the effects of climate change are real and are happening now. Like Maria, a 14-year-old from Barbados and UNICEF Youth Advocate for the Environment, who speaks out about the brutal impact of extreme weather on her country. Or MaryGrace, a 20-year-old UNICEF Club member who draws on her experience of the water crisis in her hometown of Flint, Michigan. UNICEF is proud to continue mobilizing and platforming young people in the fight against climate change.

Fighting the rollback of girls’ rights in The Gambia
The criminalization of female genital mutilation (FGM) in The Gambia in 2015 was a huge step forward for girls’ rights and health in the country. However the reality for many girls tells a different story. Despite the ban, 73 percent of Gambian girls and women between the ages of 15 and 49 have been subjected to this cruel practice. UNICEF’s representative in the country, Nafisa Binte Shafique, tells of the growing political backlash to the ban and how UNICEF is working at all levels, individual, community, and political, to keep up momentum and protect girls by highlighting the dangers of FGM.

Reaching children with essential aid in Gaza
As the war in Gaza continues, it’s children who are paying the highest price. That is why UNICEF is on the ground every day delivering lifesaving aid in the most difficult conditions. Despite air strikes, fuel shortages, communications blocks and attacks on medical and humanitarian personnel and facilities — UNICEF is striving to make a significant impact on the lives of children who need help the most. Treating malnutrition. Shoring up health services. Repairing waterworks. Building sanitation facilities. UNICEF is doing all of this essential work and will not stop in its efforts to meet the needs of children in Gaza and around the world.

Creating spaces for children to learn again in Syria
For most children in Syria, a decade-long conflict marked by daily and urgent threats to their family’s safety and security is all they have known. Children that grow up with the fear that surrounds conflict miss out on the chance to learn, develop and fulfill their huge potential. UNICEF’s early childhood education centers in Syria give young children displaced by war the space and sanctuary to learn again. Funded in part by Education Cannot Wait, this pre-primary education involves English, math, Arabic and art and provides children with the foundation for a lifetime of learning and a chance to dream again.
