As we close out Asian American & Pacific Islander Heritage Month, we recognize and celebrate the role that AAPI—and all immigrant communities—play in shaping our democracy, especially in this important election year.

To help our communities flex our growing political power, the National Council of Asian Pacific Americans (NCAPA) and the Asian American Disinformation Table (AADT) hosted Election Disinformation 201, a community call focused on election disinformation in Asian American communities. Let’s all make sure we use and share this information, stay vigilant in educating our communities, and do our part to defend our democracy!

Our democracy is on the line. With the 2024 elections less than half a year away, The Brennan Center has compiled an extensive list of new restrictive voting laws that have swept the country. While some of these laws are still being challenged, it's important to learn which states have been affected, how you can ensure your voice is heard in this important election year, and what you can do to safeguard the integrity of our elections.

In order to make progress on the issues shaping our communities, we must have a government where everyday people have a voice, rather than billionaires and corporate interests.

That's why we're urging Congress to pass the Freedom to Vote Act + John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act. We must protect our freedom to vote and combat the influence of big money in politics so that all of us - no matter our color, zip code, or income - have an equal say in our democracy.

Here are some of the amazing things our alumni have done recently:

  • Detroit City Councilmember Gabriela Santiago Romero (Ready to Lead® and Ready to Win® 2016) passed her first piece of environmental justice legislation, the Fugitive Dust Ordinance, which will require certain businesses to submit a plan outlining their efforts to mitigate fugitive dust—something that impacts air quality and community health—and enable local officials to enforce such plans and impose penalties for those in violation.
  • New York State Assemblymember Steven Raga (Ready to Lead® and Ready to Win® 2016) hosted the first-ever Nepali Community Day at the New York State Capitol in Albany, which marked a historic moment for not only the 30th Assembly District but for New York State as well.

Know someone who should be included in this list? Let us know! We're so proud of our NAL family for taking action to create a stronger, more inclusive democracy and would love to give everyone a shoutout!

Help fight systemic white supremacy by supporting our mission to get more women, immigrants, and underrepresented Americans on the ballot and into power.
