Earlier this month, I took some time to get up to Ashe County, where I was honored to be the featured speaker at the Ashe Democrat’s annual FDR Dinner. President Roosevelt has always been a role model of mine—the New Deal era was a time when our party knew how to do big things that made a real difference in the lives of working families. |
New Deal-era infrastructure investments through the Tennessee Valley Authority, the Civilian Conservation Corps, and the Works Progress Administration helped build much of our modern world—preserving natural resources, bringing electricity to rural areas, and building roads, schools, hospitals, sidewalks, basically anything you can think of.
In fact, the last few weeks I’ve been on a bit of a western tour—earlier this week I was out in Cherokee, Macon, and Jackson Counties and got to see the legacy of the New Deal at work. |
If you turn on a lightbulb in Cherokee County, you’re benefiting from the New Deal’s program of rural electrification. If you visit the Nantahala Regional Library, you’re benefiting from a project originally established by the Tennessee Valley Authority. The legacy of FDR’s investment in the American people is so vast that it still impacts our lives day to day some eight decades later.
In the depths of the Great Depression, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt said: “These unhappy times call for the building of plans ... that build from the bottom up and not from the top down, that put their faith once more in the forgotten man at the bottom of the economic pyramid.” President Roosevelt was spot on. When times get hard and folks have been left behind, we need to show them that our democracy has their back. We need to show them that we believe in them. We used to be a state that embraced that philosophy wholesale, and as your next Treasurer, I’ll work to manage our money well so that we can build up our capacity to make those kinds of investments in our people once again. But as I know you know—I can’t do this alone.
It’s the last day of the month, and I need to raise another $7,632 before midnight tonight to stay on track for our monthly fundraising budget. We’ve set some pretty ambitious goals for ourselves, but with your help, we’ve been hitting them, and we can’t afford to let up. |
