What is World No Tobacco Day?
It's a day to focus attention on the global health crisis caused by tobacco use, the world's number one cause of preventable death. It was started in 1987 by the World Health Organization (WHO). And it happens every year on May 31st.
What makes this year so important?
Now more than ever, tobacco companies are targeting young people with flashy products in kid-friendly flavors and with aggressive marketing campaigns on platforms like Facebook, TikTok and Instagram.
According to the WHO, children are using e-cigarettes at rates higher than adults in all regions, and an estimated 37 million young people aged 13-15 use tobacco. These trends must not continue – and governments around the world must use every legal, regulatory and policy tool at their disposal to reverse them.
That's why the WHO has set the theme of this year's World No Tobacco Day as #TobaccoExposed : to shine a bright light on how this predatory industry continues to target and addict kids, and to urge governments to do more to stop it.
