We must push our political leaders to take greater action on climate now – the climate crisis won’t wait. In the last few months alone, floods have ravaged Kenya and other parts of East Africa. In India this week, Delhi has recorded its highest ever temperature of 52.3°C.
We know increased extreme weather is being driven by producing and burning fossil fuels. And the risks of these toxic substances don’t end there.
In the UK, air pollution is the greatest environmental risk to public health. It’s linked to slower lung development in children and increased dementia in older adults. And the most deprived groups usually live in the most polluted areas.
We must urgently phase out fossil fuels, but if we don’t plan the process properly, we risk chaos that will likely hit people who have already experienced the sharp end of inequality the hardest.
Phasing out fossil fuels is non-negotiable if we are to secure a healthy, livable planet and a more equal world for people in the global south, ordinary people in the UK and future generations to come.
The Fossil Fuel Treaty is a bold and workable proposal to deliver this. We want party leaders seeking your vote at the general election to know that it’s a proposal you support and care about. Now is the moment to send the message that if they want your support, their manifesto should include a plan to phase out fossil fuels.
On Monday, we’ll be delivering our petition, and the names of everyone who has signed it, to party leaders. Sign the petition today to have your name included.
