Right now, state governments are scrambling to ensure their health care workers have the protective equipment they need to safely treat victims of COVID-19.
For weeks, President Trump has pressured states to find and pay for their own protective gear, like masks, gloves and face shields. But we are now hearing reports that Trump is directing FEMA to “seize” personal protective equipment (PPE), tests, and other essential medical supplies ordered by states and local hospitals.
In Massachusetts for example, state leaders confirmed an order of personal protective equipment for local health workers, but later found that the Trump Administration had taken control of the shipments. The Governor of Colorado thought his state secured 500 ventilators, but it was later reported they were “swept up” by FEMA.
Trump’s policy on PPE has been ad-hoc and confusing, and we can't let our frontline workers suffer as a result. That’s why Mike is demanding that Trump provide more information and immediately clarify the process by which states can deliver supplies to frontline healthcare workers:
