For Memorial Day, I had the honor and privilege of laying a flag at Camp Pendleton for our fallen heroes. On this solemn day, we remember and honor the uniformed men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice to protect our freedom.

For as long as our democracy rings true, they will not have died in vain.

I wrote an op-ed in the Orange County Register about ways to address the challenges at our Southern border and the need for bipartisan solutions to solve our complex border security and immigration issues.

The conditions I saw recently at the Campo Station in East County San Diego are untenable and the situation on the ground has worsened in the last few years. Congress needs to come together to reform the asylum process and surge resources to U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

Data from the House Committee on the Budget

Recently, the Republican Study Committee released a budget proposal that would raise the retirement age and make major cuts to Social Security and Medicare. According to the minority staff of the House Committee on the Budget, these changes would be detrimental to millions of Americans nationwide. People should be able to retire with dignity. Since 1935, Social Security has been an essential resource for millions of retired Americans, allowing them to enjoy their golden years. It must be protected and strengthened.

I recently led a letter to the Federal Insurance Office and the National Association of Insurance Commissioners to highlight our concerns with the steep rise of homeowners’ insurance premiums. I asked both organizations to publish data necessary to better understand how climate change may impact rates, which will help us make informed policy decisions to provide stability to the insurance industry.

Finally, I recently spoke in Oceanside to honor our active-duty servicemembers as part of Armed Forces Day.

These men and women are an integral part of California’s 49th District and we are grateful for their service.
