Helping Amazon and Meta Shareholders Fight Hate
At a time when activists are calling for divestment from Israel, ADL affiliate JLens continues to work tirelessly to combat anti-Israel shareholder proposals and to promote initiatives that fight antisemitism.
Following a JLens campaign urging investors to reject Proposal 6 at Amazon, JLens is pleased to announce that the proposal received only 16.8% of the cast votes, less than half the 34% support for the same proposal when it was submitted in 2023. While Proposal 6 ostensibly aimed to uphold human rights, it singled out Israel as the sole foreign country and was supported by multiple false statements alleging that the Israeli government uses Amazon Web Services “to support the apartheid system under which Palestinians are surveilled, unlawfully detained, and tortured.” Shareholders sent a clear message: hateful rhetoric has no place in corporate proxy statements.
And at Meta, the world's largest social media company, with billions of users on Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, the company and shareholders have a chance to pass Proposal Eleven, which would help protect children on Meta platforms in a much-needed advancement that would demonstrate a commitment to combating antisemitism and online hate. ADL and JLens have filed a notice in favor of the proposal with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, and we are urging shareholders to support it.

“From Columbia to Colombia”: “With chants of ‘we are Hamas’ and ‘globalize the intifada’ now echoing across some of the country’s most prestigious schools and being presented as calls for justice, it’s important we remember they’re ultimately advocating violence and the destruction of the Jewish state,” says ADL SVP Marina Rosenberg

in an op-ed in Politico. Rosenberg, a former Israeli ambassador, notes the antisemitic and anti-Israel hostility also seen on campuses in other countries and connects this to how those countries, like the U.S., are facing a surge of antisemitism, and she calls for defending the core values of our democratic societies.

Nakba Day and Glorification of Terrorism: As the ADL Center on Extremism documents, Nakba Day commemorations across the U.S. were compounded by a sharp rise in anti-Israel activity tied to the Israel-Hamas war that was triggered by the Oct. 7 mass terror attacks. Nakba Day (“catastrophe” in Arabic) is commemorated by Palestinians and their supporters worldwide to mourn the events related to the creation of the State of Israel. Notable trends this year included the glorification of prominent terrorists and terrorist group leaders.

Documenting Decades of Fighting Hate: ADL and the American Jewish Historical Society have announced a new partnership to preserve the archives that document ADL’s fight against antisemitism, hate and bigotry since its founding in 1913. The collaboration will safeguard more than 13,000 boxes of documents, microfilms, audiovisual recordings and photographs — a comprehensive record of hate and bigotry in the United States and ADL’s ongoing efforts to combat them.

Urge the U.S. Department of Education to Protect Jewish Students. As antisemitic incidents surge across U.S. campuses, the Department of Education must ensure that colleges and universities are fulfilling their legal obligation to protect Jewish students, who have faced verbal abuse and physical assaults. The Department of Education must designate a senior official to oversee efforts to counter antisemitic discrimination in higher education, as called for by the Countering Antisemitism Act.

ADL will judge @Harvard’s new policy of neutrality based on its execution. But this policy will not absolve the university from having allowed antisemitism to fester on campus, which will continue to directly affect the institution’s core function of research, teaching and learning if the university doesn't do better.
