Friends,

Due to the urgency of the COVID-19 pandemic, we're grateful for everyone who has done the right thing by staying at home. But these past few weeks have been hard on all of us -- families, workers, and businesses. We're seeing a disruption of our economy, which is threatening workers, small businesses, and large industries all across the board.

Last month, Kim and her colleagues in Congress passed the CARES Act, a fast-acting, robust economic package to protect small businesses and workers alike. The CARES Act is an important first step towards addressing many of the concerns facing our communities.

Small Businesses

Small businesses are the backbone of our economy, and we cannot afford to leave them behind. The Paycheck Protection Program will allow small businesses to apply for zero-fee loans to help cover payroll costs and other operating expenses to ensure they can stay open after this crisis and keep employees on payroll. Economic Injury and Disaster Loans (EIDL) are also available for small businesses and nonprofits for up to $2 million dollars. For more information about Economic Injury and Disaster Loans, click here.

Unemployment Insurance

The CARES Act includes robust unemployment insurance that kicks in right away so people have access to the funds they need and it has been expanded to include self-employed and independent contractors. In addition to eliminating the need to prove you're actively looking for a job, people receiving unemployment are eligible to receive an additional $600 a week. As difficult as it is, we need people to stay home during this time, and this increase in unemployment will support families in the short-term so they can stay home and stay healthy. To apply for unemployment, visit the Washington State Employment Security Department's website.

Stimulus Payments

The CARES Act provides a one-time payment of up to $1200 per adult and $500 per child for eligible families. Click here for more information.

It's important to remember that this won't be Congress' final action in response to COVID-19. Kim will keep working to build on the CARES Act, keep families safe, and help our economy recover from this crisis. This is a difficult time for everyone, but together, we will get through it.

Stay well,

Team Schrier
