Threats against Amazonian communities and their leaders are rising. An example was the recent death threat against Shipibo-Konibo leader Miguel Guimaraes, which prompted immediate action. In response, Amazon Watch’s Defend Earth Defenders campaign joined ally organizations to provide emergency funding, press coverage, and facilitate high-level meetings with U.S. diplomats in Lima.

We issued a global call to action, and you responded! Hundreds of international allies boosted our message, and many sent solidarity messages to Miguel, which we translated and delivered, prompting his video statement of appreciation.

Miguel said, “People entered my house violently, burning windows, and painting a written threat that ‘you won’t live.’ Over 34 leaders in the Peruvian Amazon have been assassinated for defending their forests. We appreciate all the international support and the visibility brought by Amazon Watch. Thank you for all the support!”

Is Miguel completely safe? Unfortunately, we can’t assume so, given the ongoing danger in Peru. However, our message of solidarity with him and other defenders is clear.

We count on your continued support and solidarity for this critical work. Thank you!
