News outlets have been struggling to make ends meet a long time now. Local news outlets were hit hard by the late 2000s recessions and have never recovered. More than a third of all local newspapers and two-thirds of journalists working at those papers have been lost since 2005—and the rate of loss is increasing.

Now, the problems extend far beyond small and local outlets. Ad revenue, long the lifeblood of the media, has been taken over by Big Tech, with megacorporations like Amazon, Facebook and Google triopolizing the digital ad market during the pandemic.

Through all this, Daily Kos survived only because of you and tens of thousands of other like you, Jack. Grassroots donations—that is, contributions of just a few bucks at a time—have become our biggest source of income.
