Friend -
I hope this email finds you well and ready to dive into a bit of vision-casting for the future. It's Edil De Los Reyes here, your progressive mom of two (soon to be three!) little dragons, gearing up for maternity leave but with my mind racing about the world I want them to grow up in.
As I prepare to welcome another bundle of joy into this wild world, I can't help but think about what kind of future I want for my kids and every kid out there. And let me tell you, my wishlist is as long as my grocery list on a Saturday morning. Let’s go!
Climate change —let’s get sensible about it. I want my little ones to inherit a planet that's thriving, not teetering on the brink.
Universal healthcare with abortion access for all? Absolutely. It’s 2024, and it’s about time we make healthcare a right, not a privilege. And while we’re at it, how about universal basic income and universal childcare ? Let’s give every family a solid foundation to build on.
Free college ? Sign me up. Education should be a launchpad, not a financial anchor dragging our young people down. And speaking of financial security, how about a social welfare net so robust that the stress of living paycheck to paycheck becomes a thing of the past?
Love—let’s stop policing it. Love should just be love, full stop. No more debates, no more restrictions.
I want the phrase "boys will be boys" to die a quick and quiet death. Let's raise our sons and daughters to be decent humans, not perpetuate tired excuses for bad behavior.
Equity in taxation —can we talk about this? It’s high time billionaires paid their fair share. My paycheck and a billionaire’s income being taxed the same way is a joke.
I want elected officials who have more bite than bark, who actually do what they say and stop pandering to the highest bidder. Let’s have politicians who fight for progressive policies instead of shying away from them. And those corporations buying politicians off? Time to stop overcharging the working people and start giving back meaningfully.
Lastly, women, especially women of color, should earn as much as men and be well respected. No more debates about whether women will choose the bear vs. the man. No more camera videos of so-and-so beating up their girlfriend/wife. No more commencement speeches on a woman’s most important role: a homemaker.
In a nutshell, I want a future where my girls can dream big, live fully, and thrive in a just, equitable society. A world where the next generation doesn’t have to clean up our mess but can build on a strong foundation we’ve laid out for them.
This is the future I dream of—a world where my children and all children can grow up without the fears and struggles that have become all too common. It's ambitious, but isn't that what dreams are for?
Thanks for letting me share these thoughts before I dive into the chaos and joy of newborn life once again. Let's keep fighting the good fight to make these dreams a reality.
A dreamer,
Edil Mari De Los Reyes
PowerPAC is a social justice organization that strategically directs financial and human resources to local and state organizations working to deliver wins in legislative fights, ballot initiatives, and more. For years the money we've raised has, dollar for dollar, been given back to the communities we work with. We've made sure that your investments were being used to build power for our communities because too often we are underrepresented and ignored.
