Auction Items Available at Sunday's Audubon Afternoon

In addition to a great program this coming Sunday, June 2, featuring live birds, we will have a small silent auction table with a few “birdy” items. Please stop by the table to look for something you want to take home with you. Final call for bids will be at 2:55 PM. We will be accepting check, credit card, Zelle or Paypal. All proceeds will go to benefit conservation of birds in northern Virginia.

We would like to thank our donors who provided the following items.

Item 1: John James Audubon Birds of America Plate and Teacup Set

Thank you to Mike Horton for donating a set of eight (8) Alfred Meakin luncheon plates, teacups and saucers made in England. They are reproduced from the Elephant Folio Edition of Audubon's "Birds of America." Alfred Meakin was a well-known manufacturer of earthenware in England, established in 1875 and these pieces were likely produced in the mid-20th century. The National Audubon Society authorized several series of decorative plates during this period to popularize Audubon's works and raise awareness about bird conservation. Birds featured include the now extinct Passenger Pigeon, plate 62, Turtle Dove, plate 17, Cedar Waxwing, plate 43, Bewick’s Wren, plate 18, Fork-tailed Flycatcher, plate 168, White-crowned Sparrow, plate 114, Kingbird, plate 79, and the Band-tailed Pigeon, plate 367. Estimated value for the set is approximately $400.

Item 2: Mindful Birding Package with Signed Book and Massage Gift Cards

Thank you to Elements Massage in Vienna for donating two massages with an aromatherapy add-on, and thank you to Holly Merker for donating a signed copy of her book, Ornitherapy. After a busy spring migration season, we invite you to ease back with this thoughtful package. Included is a 90- or 60-minute massage from Elements Massage, which can help repair even the worst case of warbler neck. After your massage, you may want to bring your new book to Meadowood Gardens for a mindful stroll. The book includes 58 explorations and 5 meditation prompts. Estimated value for this package is $335.

Item 3: Framed Photograph by Barbara Saffir

Thank you to Barbara Saffir for a donating a beautiful matted and framed photograph called “Cherry Cola” that depicts a female cardinal eating a cherry blossom. This beautiful work is 18 in x 24 in. Also included are two blank greeting cards depicting an indigo bunting in a field of sunflowers. Estimated value is $130.

Item 4: Birds around the World Book Package

Thank you to an anonymous donor for six beautiful books featuring birds from around the world. Books include Birds of Europe by Jonsson, 1993, Birds of China by De Schauensee, 1984, Birds of Britain and Europe by Peterson et al., 1993, Birds of Mexico and Central America by Van Pearlo, 2006, Birds of Australia by Pizzeria & Knight, 2007 and the Manual of Ornithology by Proctor & Lynch, 1993. This is a great gift for a budding ornithologist or for a recently retired birder who needs some inspiration on where to travel next. Estimated value is $180.

There may be a few additional smaller items. Visit the auction table this Sunday to see everything available!
