For decades, the fossil fuel industry has misled the American people and the world about the role oil, coal, and gas have played in creating the climate crisis. Even as the science is clear that we must immediately transition toward clean, renewable forms of energy, the fossil fuel industry continues to lobby Congress to maintain their outrageous tax handouts.

Big Oil, Gas, and Coal spent nearly $137 million to lobby Congress in 2023 in order to maintain their $17 billion in tax subsidies each year. That’s a 12,300% return on investment![1]

In his FY2025 budget, President Biden has called for the elimination of these tax subsidies and loopholes for the fossil fuel industry, and now there’s a bill that would do just that!

The End Polluter Welfare Act, introduced by Senator Bernie Sanders and Representative Ilhan Omar would close tax loopholes and eliminate corporate handouts, saving American taxpayers $170 billion over the next decade.

Write to your members of Congress now and urge them to pass the End Polluter Welfare Act to save taxpayers money and hold the fossil fuel industry accountable.

Introducing the bill, Senator Sanders said:

“At a time when scientists tell us we need to drastically reduce carbon pollution to prevent climate catastrophe, when fossil fuel companies are making billions of dollars in profit every year, and when working people across this country are living paycheck to paycheck, we have a fiscal and moral responsibility to put a stop to this absurd corporate welfare. No, working families should not be forced to pad the profits of an industry that is destroying our planet.”

Oil giants ExxonMobil, BP, Chevron, and Shell alone have accounted for more than 10% of all fossil fuel emissions worldwide since the beginning of the industrial revolution. Yet despite all that destruction, they continue to profit: in 2022, Exxon had record earnings of $56 billion.

It is well past time that we end tax handouts to a fossil fuel industry that is reaping record profits from destroying our planet while lying to the American people about their culpability.
