From organizing demonstrations at segregated businesses during the Civil Rights Movement to his work today in Congress to lower health care costs and expand broadband access, Jim has always worked to make America’s greatness accessible and affordable to all.
When he was first elected, Jim was the first Black person to represent South Carolina in nearly a century. Now, he’s our state’s longest-serving member of Congress in office. He served as chair of the Congressional Black Caucus, chair of the Democratic Caucus, House Majority Whip -- which made him the highest-ranking Black Democrat in Congress at the time -- and Assistant Democratic Leader.
And this month, President Biden awarded Jim with the Presidential Medal of Freedom -- our country’s highest civilian honor -- for his lifetime of service.
