Conservative career politician George Latimer is trying to unseat progressive champion Rep. Jamaal Bowman in New York’s 16th congressional district with the help of Trump-supporting MAGA Republicans and dark money super PACs.

AIPAC’s super PAC, United Democracy Project, which is mostly funded by GOP megadonors, has dropped nearly $8 million on ads attacking Jamaal and supporting Latimer so far — the most they’ve ever spent in a primary race.

AIPAC’s network has focused on defeating Black and brown progressives like Jamaal, and it’s becoming clearer that race is playing a key role in this effort to oust the first Black representative of NY-16 in Congress.

First, Latimer made the racist, Islamophobic, and baseless claim that Jamaal was taking money from Hamas, just because he supports a ceasefire in Gaza.

Then, he recently went on a Trump donor’s radio show to complain that Jamaal’s 2020 victory was because of too many people voting by mail and the "Black community's concerns, anger, whatever" over George Floyd’s murder by police, which he said “skewed results.”

Now, his friends at AIPAC sent out emails with photos of Jamaal that were edited to darken his skin complexion. Mailers sent out to voters by a pro-Latimer super PAC did the same thing.

Like Jamaal said, “When more people vote, our democracy is stronger. George Latimer sounds less like a Democrat and more like the MAGA extremists trying to take away the rights of Black and brown voters.”

To make matters worse, a Republican donor supporting Latimer at a fundraising event hosted by a GOP megadonor said she wants a representative who isn’t just for “his people” or “Black justice.”

The racism runs deep in this campaign to unseat Jamaal, as the racist dog whistles continue and Latimer and his supporters say the quiet part out loud.

Jamaal is a progressive champion for ALL, including those historically suppressed or ignored by those in power. We can’t lose his moral courage and commitment to justice to another corrupt, old, white Republican role-playing as a Democrat.
