Louisiana Law Makes Abortion Pills a Controlled Substance, Highlighting a New Legislative and Legal Strategy to End Abortion Access Across America
[[link removed]]
Republican Gov. Jeff Landry has signed into Louisiana law a bill that classifies mifepristone and misoprostol – the two most widely used drugs in medication abortion – as controlled substances in the state.
The Louisiana House last week passed S.B. 276, which adds the medications to Schedule IV of the state’s Uniform Controlled Dangerous Substances Law. The Senate followed suit, sending the bill to Landry’s desk for his signature. The controlled dangerous substance designation threatens those in possession of the drug without a prescription with fines and jail time of up to five years. The law has an exception for pregnant people who possess the drugs for their own consumption.

Abortion is Headed to the Ballot Box Across the Country, Here's Where Voters Will Decide
[[link removed]]
While the Minnesota Legislature did not pass legislation this session to add abortion rights to the ballot for Minnesotans in 2026, voters in up to 10 states could face abortion-rights amendments including neighboring state South Dakota. Several states that outlaw most abortions could see those bans reversed if the ballot measures pass: Arkansas, Florida, Missouri, Nebraska. Voters have already backed abortion rights at the ballot box in at least six states since the reversal of Roe v. Wade, including conservative-leaning Kentucky and Kansas.
Getting amendments on the ballot takes legwork, gathering tens or hundreds of thousands of signatures. Then, there could be court challenges. The statewide up-or-down votes could motivate more voters to the polls, shaping the race for president, the battle for which party controls Congress and, in Arizona for example, which party runs the legislature.
