Throughout the coronavirus pandemic, public health leaders like Dr. Anthony Fauci have stepped up to provide the public with information to keep them safe.

During this crisis, we should look to leaders like Dr. Fauci who have years of experience fighting diseases for how to respond -- but instead, last night, President Trump shared a tweet that said "Time to #FireFauci."

Firing Dr. Fauci at the height of the coronavirus emergency would be a catastrophe. I'm calling on Mitch McConnell and Dan Sullivan to show some backbone, stand up to President Trump, and protect Dr. Fauci's job now.

It should be simple: We need public health officials to lead the response to a public health crisis. We need pandemic experts to help fight a pandemic. Even when they're the bearers of bad news, it's what we need to hear to move forward.

As a doctor, I have to tell patients news they don't want to hear all the time -- and I always give my patients options based on what is best for them and their health. It's part of the job. And when I'm in the Senate, I'll tell it like it is to whoever is the president.

The American people need to have a medical expert they trust advising this administration during COVID-19. If Dan and Mitch don't have the backbone to stand up to Donald Trump and protect Dr. Fauci from being fired, they're not fit to be in charge.
